Is it a Crime for Fanboys to Like Male Idols?

If you’re a fanboy with a male idol crush or bias then raise your hand. Alright…You can put your hand back down now. Next, for those same fanboys, raise your hand if you’ve ever felt victimized by said male idol? By any male idol? This occurs when male idols reject your affection as a fan because you have a penis that might want their penis. They feel their masculinity is threatened because you make them feel “uncomfortable” and then they vocalize it publicly – that you as a male fan should NOT be in love with them. That they do not want your love.

Being a fanboy should NOT come with the open disgust of your bias telling you to go do something else with your time. Like you’re broken or something. The facts are these: there are some fanboys who are gay and some who are not, but by no means should either be treated any differently or like they’re the scum of the earth. Not all fanboys are romantically attracted to their male biases so they shouldn’t automatically be treated like they are. And for the record, it should never be considered a negative to be called “gay” period. I’m vehement about this and other such topics, because situations like these perpetuate more hate and more ignorance for no damn reason at all. I mean jinjja you guys, jinjja!

I’m sick and tired of innocent, kind, and cute fanboys being treated shittily by their male biases. I’m sick and tired of no one standing up for them when they boldly pronounce their love for their idols. I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired, so let’s talk about it. Let’s talk about how we don’t talk about it! For example, some months ago SHINee went on the program Guerrilla Date where idols are interviewed while walking around in public, allowing for fans (including fanboys) to approach them. The stoning starts at the 3:00 mark, when one such fanboy dares to love Taemin out loud. The whole crowd goes berserk over the rare and elusive fanboy being caught on camera. The MC teases the poor dude about how much he loves SHINee:

MC: “You must love them?”
Fanboy: “I do”
MC: “How much?”
Fanboy: “Very much”
MC: “Who’s your bias?”
Fanboy: “Taemin”
MC: “Would you like to give him a hug?”

And he does.

Taemin not only makes on of the most awkward faces imaginable, while the onlookers watch on with scandal in their eyes – no doubt already halfway through mentally writing the fanfiction – but he also feels the need to say “I like girls.”

Excuse me? Um…waiter, can I get a “WTF” with a side of fries please?

That poor boy’s only crime was being a guy and a fan. I would’ve been mortified, and that’s before all the online fallout from netizens posting to sites with the headline: “Taemin gets awkward hug from fanboy.”

“Nope, sorry Mom, I’m never leaving the house again,” is what I  would’ve said. And like Taemin even has room to talk. At least this poor kid wasn’t fake making out with Junghyun on a stage in front of thousands for the weird enjoyment of their female fan-base, which is another topic in itself. The fact of the matter is that if you, Taemin, can be comfortable mock-snogging a boy on stage, then you should be more than comfortable with hugging someone who genuinely likes you.

If you’re going to treat fanboys terribly at least be more clear about why, like other idols. An idol like Choi Siwon – Mr. Chocolate Abs himself – explains his distaste via his beliefs in Christianity. Every time the debate of Siwon’s hardcore Christianity comes up, anyone who comments truthfully negatively on the matter is shot in the heart with an arrow by some ELF who springs up from the woodlands to protect their idol’s integrity. He at least admits that it’s because of his spirituality that he cannot support any man – gay or straight or in-between – who shows him any affection like they “should be reserved for a woman.” And I get that. I can understand and respect religious beliefs.

Except when they’re stupid ass beliefs, in which case no, you go in the Rant Blender, set on: “CHOP YOU UP!”

He, too, was captured on camera, being incredibly rude to his fan. Siwon casually walks through an airport with paparazzi, managers, and fans alike. He hears one particular fanboy over the rest who declares “I love you, Siwon,” to which he stops, turns around, and replies “No!”

He had to have heard everyone in that airport. He had to have heard all the other people chattering and praising and cameras snapping. Yet he chooses to stop and respond to one fanboy, and it was to tell him “No.”

I ask you, what would Shisus do?

Imagine getting the chance to meet your favorite celebrity, telling them you love them, and they respond: “No,” with an almost terrified look on their face. And then having an entire airport filled with your peers, your friends, the press, LAUGH AT YOU. Oh…that’s funny. *Burns everything of Suju’s within reach* that’s real funny. Not funny: haha but funny: A-CHA!  Choi Siwon, you hurt my feelings and I’m not laughing about it. In fact, I stopped listening to Super Junior altogether because I couldn’t stand to see him in it.

These sad situations with Taemin and Siwon keep happening “Again and Again and Again,” like with Lee Junho of 2pm, who’s seriously this close to being labeled the resident Regina George of JYP, in my book. My dubbing him the Queen Bee herself from the movie Mean Girls is because when reading this online chat he did with fans where he answers questions from lucky fans, I couldn’t help but hear her voice in my head.  His responses were littered with bitter repartee and none felt the blow better than one lucky/unlucky fanboy.

[Fan] Hyung !!!!!!Love you kkkkkkkkkkkk I’m a fanboy who went to Dream Team yesterday with a fanboard kkkkkkkkk
[Junho] Love should be shared with a girl

Okay now wait…when is enough, enough? Let me reiterate, not all fanboys are gay, so this dude could very well have just admired him as a role model, right? And if he was gay then still shame on Junho for being such an asswipe, and I can’t think of a better noun that encapsulates how sour of a personality he must have to say something like that. That kind of behavior is beyond unacceptable and whether or not he meant it in a joking tone is moot to the point, because the least he could’ve said was “thank you” to a fan who took time and money out of their lives to support him. And for that? What a waste. Two hamburgers for you Junho, then into the Blender with you too.

Is it just me or does it seem like Junho, Siwon, and Taemin are treating fanboys like how they should be treating sasaeng fans – or how one would imagine they talk to the stalkerish ghouls of the K-ingdom? You guys, that’s really not okay.

Listen up male idols, boys can be fans too regardless of sexual orientation and whether or not you’re confused by their intent should not disuade you from treating them with the respect they deserve as human beings. Because at the end of the day their money is going into your pocket, their likes are going on your Facebook pages, their support for you is making a difference. Maybe not as much as the whole of the female population that inundates K-Pop, but enough to be noticed, surely. I implore you to think about that, the next time you feel the need to insult a fanboy or reject their adoration of you. And if you don’t, then I hope the sound of the Rant Blender haunts you in your sleep. If you’re a fanboy (or fangirl!) whatever your sexual flavor, victimized or otherwise,  sound off below!
